Why is breakfast important?

There is a big debate going on about the value of breakfast. If you read my other post about intermittent fasting, you know that there can substantial health benefits from sometimes skipping the first meal of the day. However, as a normal weight individual with a very busy clinical schedule, for me, skipping breakfast is not an option--its actually the most important meal of the day.


The first thing to consider is your natural rhythm (are you a night owl? do you excercise in the mornings, does your job have a predictible schedule? what is the quality of sleep)

Blanket recommendations such as skipping breakfast do not benefit everyone. In-fact some of my most successful pre-surgical "weight loss" patients start every day with a 30 gram, high fiber protein shake that keeps them satisfied for 5-6 hours, which prevents unhealthy snacking and consumption of sugary beverages.


Breakfast Dos and Don'ts

Do eat something with fiber (eg. oatmeal). Don't eat something high in sugar (brown sugar, cereals etc.)
